Ernai: long-term support and secrecy

Ernai is an older term for a woman in a long-term relationship with a married or otherwise committed man, often with financial support and a separate household.

The word emphasises economic dependence and hidden domesticity. It says less about love than about a structure of money, secrecy and obligation.

Xiaosan: intrusion into a marriage

Xiaosan is a newer internet term for a third party in a marriage or committed relationship. The emphasis is on the intrusion and the harm to the existing couple.

It is a moral accusation more than a description. The same person may be called ernai in one context and xiaosan in another.

Lover and sugar baby are different again

Lover can imply emotional and sexual intimacy without money or marriage. Sugar baby implies an exchange involving support, companionship or both.

Labels overlap, but they do not tell you whether the relationship is abusive, illegal, consensual or commercial. Details matter.

The legal issues behind the insult

Marriage, shared property, gifts, bigamy, privacy and violence can all become legal issues. The label used in an argument is not the legal test.

If money or property is involved, document the transfers and consult a lawyer. If there are threats or violence, prioritise safety and contact the police.

If you are caught in the middle

  • Do not confront the other person alone if there is a risk of violence.
  • Save threats, messages and financial records.
  • Find a lawyer or the 12348 public legal service line for advice.
  • Talk to someone you trust about your safety and housing options.
  • Avoid publishing private information about anyone involved.
